BRAIDSTOP PROFESSIONAL GUIDE 02

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE BRAID

Your hands perform the service. Science explains what happens.

PAGE 1 — HAIR IS NOT JUST “HAIR”

Hair is a biological fibre with mechanical and chemical properties.

When you braid it, you manipulate that fibre.

You’re working with variables such as:

  • diameter
  • density
  • elasticity
  • curl pattern
  • length
  • friction
  • tangling
  • previous processing
  • environmental exposure.

This is why two clients with the same curl classification can behave completely differently during a service.

THE PROFESSIONAL QUESTION

Instead of:

“Is this 4C hair?”

Ask:

“What are the actual characteristics of this client’s hair?”

Hair typing can describe appearance.

It does not tell you everything you need to know to safely perform a service.

PAGE 2 — FRICTION CHANGES THE GAME

During preparation, detangling and braiding, hair can experience mechanical forces.

More friction can mean:

  • harder detangling
  • more force required
  • more manipulation
  • greater opportunity for mechanical stress.

Your product chemistry research makes this important connection: conditioning systems can reduce friction and improve manageability, which can make preparation less mechanically demanding.

THIS CHANGES HOW YOU THINK ABOUT PRODUCTS

You don’t necessarily need a product because it says:

“moisture.”

You might need it because the service requires:

slip.

Different problem.

Different function.

PAGE 3 — THE CASE STUDY

Client A:

  • dense
  • healthy ends
  • good elasticity
  • minimal tangling.

Client B:

  • fine strands
  • previous breakage
  • very tangled
  • chemically processed
  • fragile hairline.

Both want long knotless braids.

Should you use the same:

  • section size?
  • extension weight?
  • tension?
  • preparation?
  • finishing products?

Probably not.

PROFESSIONAL THINKING

STYLE REQUEST → HAIR ASSESSMENT → RISK → TECHNIQUE → RESULT

Not:

PHOTO → COPY → HOPE.

PAGE 4 — THE QUESTION THAT CHANGES YOUR BRAIDING

Before your next appointment, ask:

“What is the hair telling me?”

The more you understand hair behaviour, the less you have to rely on guesswork.

And that is the real purpose of hair science.
