A proper wash routine is vital for Afro-textured hair, whether loose or braided.
Follow these steps in this exact order:
-
Pre-Cleanse / Detangle (Optional)
-
Lightly detangle using fingers or wide-tooth comb with oil or conditioner before washing.
-
This helps prevent breakage.
-
-
Cleanse (Shampoo)
-
Use a cleansing shampoo at least once a month and use moisturizing shampoo more regularly or co-wash ( use conditioner only)
-
Focus on scalp and roots
-
For braids, dilute shampoo with water and apply using an applicator bottle.
-
-
Condition / Mask
-
Apply a moisturizing or strengthening conditioner or mask.
-
Leave on for 10–20 minutes.
-
Rinse with lukewarm water.
-
-
Cool Rinse (Optional)
-
Helps close the cuticle and add shine.
-
-
Dry Gently
-
Use a microfiber towel or T-shirt. Do not rub — pat dry.
-
-
Leave-in Conditioner
-
Adds moisture and helps detangle. Apply generously and detangle with a wide tooth comb or detangle brush.
-
-
Seal & Style
-
Use a light oil or cream depending on your hair’s needs (see Lesson 3).
